Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Teachers’ Day speech evoked mixed reactions — while some welcomed the initiative to interact with students, others felt the PM’s message was more for children than teachers.
Principal of Laxman Public School Usha Ram said, “The day went off without a glitch as we had made arrangements for buses and rooms. Students were excited to be a part of the programme and applauded at several portions of the speech.”
Neenu Goswami, principal, Bal Bharati, Rohini, said, “Around 15,000 students assembled in two auditoriums and the screening began on time.
The feeling of togetherness and camaraderie was what I loved about the occasion. The children were not just passive listeners. They raised their hands when he asked a question and clapped when he made a point.”
However, Jyoti Bose, principal of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, said, “Although it was Teachers’ Day, the message was largely addressed to students…”
Meanwhile, due to the changed school timings, parents had a tough time getting their wards home as Delhi Transport Corporation refused to provide buses to schools in the evening.
“We can provide buses to schools for the morning and afternoon shifts, but not in the evening rush-hour. DTC has to cater to people returning from work,” a DTC official said.
At DPS, Mathura Road, parents had to pick up their wards as the school could not arrange for transportation. By 5 pm, several cars parked outside the school caused traffic snarls. “I had to leave work early to pick my daughter. We came to know about the school’s transport arrangement two days back,” the mother of a Class VI student said.
Several students complained of glitches in the screening. “We could not see the video properly because of the rain. Speakers in the classroom were not working. We then went to another classroom and saw just five minutes of the speech,” a DPS, Mathura Road, student said.
