Miranda House’s legal notice to Amazon Prime’s Ziddi Girls: Take down trailer, arrange preview

Alleging the portrayal of the fictional institution, Matilda House (MH), in the Amazon Prime series Ziddi Girls bears an “unmistakable resemblance” to Delhi University’s Miranda House, the college has issued a legal notice to the makers.
The notice sent through a Delhi University-empaneled lawyer has demanded that the trailer of the show be edited again to eliminate the short-form reference “MH” and that the college administration, along with the student union, be allowed a preview of the series before its release on February 27, said sources.
Directed by Shonali Bose, an alumnus of Miranda House, Ziddi Girls is set in a Delhi college named Matilda House (MH) and follows the lives of its students. The makers have maintained that the show is fictional yet students and alumni argue that the similarities between Matilda House and Miranda House are too stark to ignore.
The decision to take legal action, sources said, was made by an eight-member committee formed by Principal Prof. Bijayalaxmi Nanda. Student representatives are also a part of the committee.
The first trailer had objectionable content, particularly concerning the depiction of women and the institution itself, as per the panel. While the filmmakers have since released a revised trailer, sources at the college emphasised that the original version remains online, prompting the college to insist on its complete removal.
“The college has officially requested that the first trailer be taken down, that the word ‘House’ be removed from the fictional college’s name, and that any reference to ‘MH’ be eliminated,” said an official source, adding that the situation remains unresolved.
The legal notice was issued on Monday, and the college is awaiting a formal response from the series’ creators.
Last week, The Indian Express reported that Miranda House had strongly criticised the series’ portrayal of its students, arguing that it misrepresents the college and tarnishes its legacy.
When contacted Bose told The Indian Express, “A little over 24 hours to the show. Please watch. No betrayal of my college whatsoever. Nothing regressive in it….”
