Minister puts full stop to all digging in city

Finance Minister A K Walia has announced that there will be a complete ban on digging by any agency on the Capital’s roads from now on.

Finance Minister A K Walia has announced that there will be a complete ban on digging by any agency on the Capital’s roads from now on.

“It has been observed that in certain cases road cutting is being undertaken even after completion of work like laying the pavement and so on. This process does not seem to end anywhere. So the government will not grant permission to any agency to carry out any work,” said Finance and Urban Development Minister A K Walia.

Walia has asked all discoms,MTNL and ECIL to finish works by August 16. There have been several instances of freshly laid pavements being broken and relaid. One of the examples is close to the Delhi Secretariat, where a new pavement was dug up for road widening. “These things happen due to lack of coordination and due to multiplicity of authority,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had said in an Idea Exchange session at The Indian Express office on Tuesday.

Walia said,“The rampant road cutting will not only damage the city’s image but also prove to be harmful to recently developed infrastructure of the Capital.” He has asked the MCD and the Delhi Police to strictly enforce the provisions of the Delhi Defacement Act,which envisages stringent action, including hefty fines and imprisonment. He also directed the agencies to ensure that no poster, banner or wall writing is visible in the city.
