A five-month-old girl drowned after she was thrown into a drain by her father in Swaroop Nagar,Northwest Delhi, on Monday night.
Police said the father was suffering from a mental illness and was alone at home with his daughter at the time of the incident. His wife and mother had gone to the market to buy vegetables.
The mans brother informed police about the incident. He told police that his brother took the infant to a drain,around 500 metres from their Sant Nagar house,and threw her in.
On his way back home,the man met his brother. When he asked about the girl,the man said he had thrown her in to a drain. The brother rushed to rescue the child,but found her dead. He then made a PCR call from the spot, a senior police officer said.
Police took the childs body out of the drain and sent it for post-mortem examination. The father was arrested from his house.
The father is mentally unsound. He did not try to run, said Meenu Chawdhary,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest).
