MCD to desilt drains before June 30 to prevent flooding this monsoon

To prevent a repeat of last year’s water-logging problems during the monsoon, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has embarked on an action plan to de-silt the drains of Delhi twice before June 30.

To prevent a repeat of last year’s water-logging problems during the monsoon, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has embarked on an action plan to de-silt the drains of Delhi twice before June 30.

The MCD has 3,287 four-feet-deep drains in an area measuring 1,505 km. The action plan has been forwarded by the Director-in-Chief,DEMS,to all the Deputy Commissioners of 12 zones, besides the Mayor,Deputy Mayor, and chairmen of the Standing Committee as well as other ad-hoc panels.

“If a particular official-in-charge does not comply with the deadlines, the area Councilor and Deputy Commissioner can just call them up and demand an explanation. We have provided all their numbers in the plan,” a senior MCD official said. As per the action plan, the Department of Environment Management Services (DEMS) will desilt each drain twice before June 30.

The plan has every detail, including the names of the officer in-charge of a particular area in each zone and their phone numbers. A complete schedule, including the dates fixed for cleaning a particular stretch of drain, has been prepared. “It also has details such as the length of the drain in a particular area, and the deadline for cleaning each of them,” the official added.

Last year, the MCD left the silt taken out of the drains along either side of the roads. However,it had flowed back into the drains when the rains started, clogging them again. Stating that the civic body is making adequate arrangements to remedy the issue this year,Standing Committee chairman Yogender Chandolia said,“First the silt will be dried, and then MCD vehicles will deposit it at solid landfill sites.” The plan has already been put in action, and all the work will be completed by June,he added.

The new action plan was made in view of the Capital witnessed heavy waterlogging last year. The MCD,which was been de-silting drains through the year, said 85-90 per cent of the work has already been completed.
