MCD Commissioner K S Mehra has suspended two officials of the Building department,West Zone, for the collapse that occurred in Uttam Nagar on Saturday. He also ordered a vigilance inquiry into the incident.
Identifying the suspended officials as Assistant Engineer P P Puri and Junior Engineer Sumit Meena,Mehra said that the report is expected in seven days. I have also instructed the deputy commissioners to report any illegal construction work taking place in their areas and ensure punitive action against them. The officials responsible have been suspended, he added.
The area comes under the jurisdiction of Deputy Commissioner (West Zone) Krishna Kumar. Kumar was the Deputy Commissioner of City Zone when the Chandni Mahal collapse occurred. Soon after the incident,Kumar was transferred to West Zone. However, senior officials maintained that Kumars transfer had nothing to do with the Chandni Mahal collapse, and the decision pertaining to his transfer was taken long ago.
Speaking to Newsline,Kumar said that the area in Uttam Nagar, where the building collapsed,is an unauthorised regularised area. The contractor had dug up the foundation to the extent it affected that of the adjoining structure, causing the accident. He had not sought our approval, Kumar said.
