The principal of a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) school in Kishangarh was transferred by the civic body on administrative grounds on Thursday after it was alleged that he sent vulgar and offensive messages to female teachers in the school’s WhatsApp group.
The principal has been moved to a school in Sultanpuri with immediate effect, while an inquiry is underway, sources in the MCD said.
The issue had come up during MCD’s Standing Committee on Wednesday, following which Chairperson Satya Sharma had said that action will be taken soon in the matter.
In late October, MCD Education Committee Chairperson Yogesh Verma had written to the municipal commissioner, urging that strict action be taken against the principal and the officials who allegedly ignored complaints from the female teachers and failed to ensure a “safe and dignified working environment for all teachers”.
“I had also requested that the principal should not stay in the same school to ensure that the inquiry is conducted in a fair manner,” Verma said on Thursday.
In a letter written by the teachers of the school, the principal has been accused of mentally harassing female staffers, even sending them obscene messages at night. “He threatened to slap us when we tried to stop him and used casteist language,” the letter had stated.
A source in MCD said, “Since the proceedings are ongoing, the principal has been transferred on administrative grounds.”
The source added that the case has been forwarded to the Zonal Internal Complaints Committee set up on the basis of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act.
