Massive fire at DU college: Over 3,000 books gutted, some exams postponed
The video of the fire showed flames coming out of the shattered window panes of the red building of Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce.

More than 3,000 books were reduced to ashes after a massive fire broke out in the library of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce (SGGSCC) in North Delhi’s Pitampura on Thursday morning, forcing the cancellation of some semester exams and prompting the college to switch to manual book issuance. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Officials at SGGSCC, a constituent college under Delhi University, said the blaze triggered by a short circuit in the library’s server severely damaged the section housing old books on the second floor.
“Since lights were to be cut off for the fire department to extinguish the fire, we postponed the exams scheduled in the morning. Afternoon examinations went on as usual. The controller of examination is yet to notify a fresh date for the exams,” SGGSCC Principal Jatinder Bir Singh told The Indian Express.
More than 3,000 books were burnt in the fire, he told PTI.
While the library’s online system was damaged in the incident, the facility remains functional, with books being issued manually to students amid the ongoing semester exams, he added.
According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS), the fire started around 8.55 am in the four-floor building. While the flames were initially restricted to the first floor, DFS chief Atul Garg said the fire quickly spread to the second and third floors, resulting in books being burned in the library. As many as 11 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
“By 9.40 am, we brought the fire under control. It took time as strong winds fanned the fire further… A short circuit seems to be the initial reason for the fire. The police will investigate further,” a DFS official said.
