Marksheet scam accused jumps off building, dies

An accused in the Ramjas College fake marksheet scam allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of his building in Paschim Vihar,West Delhi,on Friday evening.

An accused in the Ramjas College fake marksheet scam allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of his building in Paschim Vihar,West Delhi,on Friday evening. Though no suicide note was found, police say the 22-year-old man may have killed himself because he was depressed over being named in the scam.

Police were informed about the incident around 7.30 pm by staffers at the Action Balaji Hospital in Paschim Vihar, where the youth was taken to.

“On Friday, the deceased’s father went around the house looking for him. When he didn’t find him,he went out onto the street, where he saw his son lying in a pool of blood. Though the youth was rushed to the hospital,he was declared dead on arrival. Following this,we received a PCR call from the hospital,” a senior police officer said. It was later ascertained that the boy had jumped from the terrace of his building.

Senior police officers have confirmed that the student was one of the accused in the fake marksheet scam, which was reported in the beginning of October this year. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the deceased at the Maurice Nagar police station in North Delhi on November 15,when the college principal Dr Rajender Prasad approached police.

Police said the student was a first-year BA (Hons) Economics student. A case of cheating and forgery under Sections 420,468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the accused for having submitted a fake marksheet and a fake provisional certificate.

Police said the deceased was probably depressed over the fact that his name had surfaced in the scam. “No suicide note was found. The matter is being investigated,” the officer said.

So far,as many as 32 students from different streams have been implicated in this scam,of which 27 students are from the first year and five are from the second.
