The accused was produced before a city court on Sunday and has been sent to judicial custody, police said.A 35-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly impersonating a Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) employee and attempting to extort Rs 10,000 from a contractor engaged in debris removal work at Sector-14, the Gurgaon city police said.
The accused has been identified as Hitesh Khatri, a resident of New Colony.
The matter came to light after an FIR was registered on Friday under sections 204 (personating a public servant), 308(2) (extortion by putting a person in fear of accusation of an offence punishable with imprisonment for ten years or more), and 62 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the complaint, the victim had taken a contract to clear construction debris from a public school at Sector-14. He said he received a call from his tractor driver who informed him that two men, who claimed to be MCG employees, were threatening to issue a challan for lifting debris without a licence.
“When the complainant reached the spot behind the school, the two men allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 to refrain from imposing a fine. They allegedly pressured him after he said he did not have the money,” a police spokesperson said.
Khatri was subsequently arrested from Sector-14.
“During questioning, Khatri revealed that he runs a tattoo designing course in Gurugram and that his accomplice is a ‘daily-wage employee with the MCG’. The duo had hatched the plan to extract money by posing as corporation officials and threatening to impose penalties,” the spokesperson added.
The accused was produced before a city court on Sunday and has been sent to judicial custody, police said.
“Further investigation is underway, and efforts to nab the second accused are on,” an officer said.
