Man held for installing cameras, spying on tenant: Delhi Police

Upon further investigation, police found a second hidden camera in the bulb holder of her bedroom.

Delhi Police have booked Karan under section 77 (voyeurism) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A 30-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly installing a camera and spying on his father’s tenant in East Delhi’s Shakarpur.

The woman, who lived alone in the apartment and was preparing for competitive exams, began suspecting that she was being spied on after she noticed her WhatsApp account was linked to a device she was not familiar with. This discovery prompted her to search for further evidence of invasion of privacy, leading her to find a hidden camera in the bulb holder of her bathroom, said police.

Disturbed, she called the police. Upon further investigation, police found a second hidden camera in the bulb holder of her bedroom. “(The woman) revealed that she often entrusted her house keys to the landlord’s son, Karan, who lives on a different floor of the same building,” said DCP (East) Apoorva Gupta.

During police questioning, Karan said he allegedly installed the spy cameras three months earlier. When the victim had gone to her hometown in Uttar Pradesh, he took the opportunity to purchase three spy cameras from a local electronics market and installed two in her apartment.

“Since these cameras could not be operated online and used a memory card to store videos, he persistently requested the woman’s house keys under the pretext of needing to repair electrical fixtures and fans so he could transfer the recorded videos from the memory card to his laptop,” said DCP Gupta.

During the investigation, one spy camera was recovered from Karan’s possession, along with two laptops used to store the recorded videos. Police have booked Karan under section 77 (voyeurism) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
