His wife was found in their bedroom, bleeding profusely from the head. She is now in ICU but out of danger.
Police said it appears the husband attacked her with a blunt object before killing himself, though the cause of death has yet to be established.
Police said marital discord looks like a probable cause. The incident comes a day after a 36-year-old man slit his wife’s throat and committed suicide by jumping before a train in East Delhi. Relationship trouble is also said to be behind the twin deaths.
Police said they could not open the main door, which was locked from inside, when they responded to a call around 6 am on Sunday. They entered through the balcony and found Amit Bachhan’s body lying in the drawing room of the three-bedroom flat. A black wire, wrung loose from the wall, was tied around his neck, police said.
His wife Shivani, 30, was lying in their bedroom. Her head bore injury marks from a blunt object. Near her was a blood-stained stool. Police said they also found the door to another room latched from the outside. When they opened it, they found Amit’s mother, Chandrakanta, 58, in a state of shock. Police said Amit had beaten his wife with the stool and then committed suicide.
“I had gone to sleep around1 am on Sunday. I got up once but found my room’s door was locked from outside. I kept yelling and asking for the door to be opened but heard no voices. I only heard frantically shuffling feet. Then after a few hours police opened the door to my room and I found my son lying dead in the hall. Shivani was in a state of shock with blood all over her,” the mother said.
Amit was sent to hospital where he was declared brought dead. Police said they have begun an inquest under Section 174 of the CrPC as the case looks like one of suicide.
Shivani’s father Ashok said, “Shivani called police but she could not get through. She also called me and her mother early Sunday morning but we missed the calls.” He claimed that when Shivani called police, the only thing she said repeatedly and hysterically was “he will kill me”. “When she almost fainted from all the beating, she heard Amit say that she had died. That might have pushed him to suicide,” Ashok claimed.
Amit worked as a software engineer in the multinational ION Trading company in Noida. He used to live in Noida earlier. However, after he married Shivani, he moved into a rented flat in Dwarka Sector 18 because Shivani works in Carsen Wagonlit Travel company, based in Gurgaon. The two had met over Jeevansathi.com, an online marriage portal, in early 2014. They got engaged in July and married in November. However, relatives say they had begun fighting with each other from the start, usually over petty issues.
Amit’s sister Trisha said the couple was having a strained marriage. “They used to get into fights on the flimsiest of grounds. She hardly lived in this flat though Amit had moved in from Noida to Dwarka. She hardly had any sort of a relationship with Amit,” Trisha said.
“They used to fight over money issues as well. A week back, Amit asked Shivani for some money and a bitter argument followed,” a friend of Amit said.
