Man behind bars in new trouble over desire for mom’s food

In JAIL since 2004,Dheer Singh longed for home-cooked food and hoped his mother, who came to court each time he appeared for a hearing, could bring him food. But this desire pushed him to another crime. And this time, the judge himself is ready to take the witness box to testify against Singh.

The 30-year-old,accused in several cases of carjacking, had moved an application before Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Tewari to allow him winter clothes and food cooked by his mother inside jail. The judge, however, gave permission only for the winter clothes.

The temptation for home-cooked food, however, got the better of Singh. Grabbing a pen as he waited in the court lock-up before being taken to jail,he scrawled “food allowed” in his own handwriting on ASJ Tewari’s order. He wrote this in the space above the judge’s order stating “woollen inside T-shirt and inner pyjamas allowed to be taken from the court itself”.

The difference in handwriting, however, made lock-up in-charge Sub-Inspector Jagdish Chander suspicious.Familiar with the handwritings and signatures of Rohini court judges,Chander moved an application before ASJ Tewari, seeking clarification on the order passed on December 24.

While Singh kept quiet when he was asked whether he had been given permission for food,ASJ Tewari identified the tampering.

“The presiding officer of this court recognises his own handwriting and also to naked eyes the words ‘food allowed’ are totally in a different handwriting. The formation of the letters, pen pauses, pen slips, the curves, etc,in the words are totally different from the other portion of the order written by the presiding officer,” the order sheet noted.

ASJ Tewari pulled up Singh, telling him that he would now have to face additional trial for cheating and forgery.

“It is quite clear on the record that this order has either been forged or got forged by the accused Singh. The accused used the forged order (to) induce the lock-up in-charge and other judicial custody lock-up officials to allow him to take food from his mother. Thus, the accused has prima facie committed the offence of cheating and forgery,” the order read.

ASJ Tewari asked the lock-up in-charge to get an FIR registered against Singh. This time, the judge directed that copies of the order must be sent to the jail superintendent as well.
