Man arrested for stealing Rs 42 L from employerPolice said that Suraj was apprehended from his residence in Mukundpur and the police recovered Rs 13.5 lakh of the stolen cash.

A 23-year-old worker at a wholesale mobile shop has been arrested for allegedly stealing Rs 42.39 lakh from his employer, police said. Four more associates of Suraj – the accused – have been identified with the help of facial recognition technology, police said, noting that efforts are underway to trace them.

The police were notified of the robbery on November 5, after other employees of the shop informed the owner that the store’s rear window had been broken.

On inspection, the owner realised that cash worth Rs 42.39 lakh was missing, officers said.

The police examined the CCTV footage and saw four men entering the shop at 2:15 am on November 5 and exiting it by 2:50 am.

“Their trail was traced up to Kamal T-Point through an auto-rickshaw…reverse route analysis further showed that the accused had earlier arrived in an e-rickshaw and alighted near Om Bhature at 11:20 pm on November 4…Technical analysis confirmed their movement sequence from Ashok Vihar to Shastri Nagar and subsequently towards the place of occurrence,” said DCP (Central), Nidhin Valsan.

The police subsequently questioned the shop’s employees and used Facial Recognition technology-based software, such as C-Trace and C-Boat, to match the faces of those captured on CCTV footage. The police eventually narrowed down their suspect to Suraj.

“These findings, supported by technical data, revealed consistent communication between Suraj and the suspected offenders…based on the combined evidence, the accused were identified as Rishabh, Avinash, Abhishek and Anil, all residents of Shahjahanpur,” said DCP Valsan.

Police said that Suraj was apprehended from his residence in Mukundpur and the police recovered Rs 13.5 lakh of the stolen cash. However, when a raiding team made their way to Shahjahanpur to apprehend the four accused, they were found to be absconding.

During Suraj’s questioning, police said, he allegedly admitted to police that he was an employee of the shop and was aware of where the cash was stored. Motivated by greed, he allegedly shared the information to his associates, who subsequently committed the theft, officers said.

“Continuous raids, technical surveillance and coordinated efforts are underway in Delhi and adjoining states to apprehend the remaining offenders,” said DCP Valsan.
