The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) cancelled the affiliation of 20 schools across India on Friday after it was revealed that they were involved in malpractices.

To curb the tendency to sponsor dummy candidates in the Board Examinations, the CBSE conducted surprise inspections in 34 schools across the country on December 21 last year with a two-member committee sent to each school.

As per officials, 34 schools were inspected on a single day and many of the inspected schools were found indulging in some form of malpractice. Based on these reports, 11 schools were issued advisories and 23 schools were issued show-cause notices by the CBSE Affiliation Unit. The decision was approved by the board late last year.

In Delhi, five schools have lost affiliation, which include Siddhartha Public School, Bharat Mata Saraswati Bal Mandir, National Public School, Chand Ram Public Senior Secondary School and Marigold Public School.

Among the other schools whose affiliation has been cancelled include two in Rajasthan — Prince UCH Madhyamik Vidyalaya in Sikar and Global Indian International School in Jodhpur – and two in Chhattisgarh — Dronacharya Public School and Vicon School in Raipur. In Jammu and Kashmir, Kartar Public School in Kathua has been disaffiliated.

In Maharashtra, Rahul International School in Thane and Pioneer Public School in Pune lost affiliation while San RNS Academy in Assam’s Dispur, and Sardar Patel Public School in Bhopal were also disaffiliated.

Three schools in Uttar Pradesh — Loyal Public School in Bulandshahr, Trinity World School in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Crescent Convent School in Ghazipur – also lost affiliation. Three schools, including The Vivekananda School in Narela, Delhi, Sri Dasmesh Senior Secondary Public School in Batinda, Punjab and Sreeram Academy in Barpeta, Assam have been downgraded.

The affiliation bye-laws clearly state that any school affiliated to the Board must sponsor only those candidates in the Board examinations who are bona fide students of the school and are attending classes at the school regularly.

A few important actions taken by the CBSE to check the unfair practice of sponsoring dummy students include the registration of students in classes IX and XI, submission of examination forms in classes X and XII, permission for direct admission in classes X and Class XII, student strength per section, allotment of section at the time of affiliation, and a minimum attendance of 75 per cent to appear for the examinations.

“The Board was informed that some of the schools are indulging in the malpractice of sponsoring dummy candidates in the Board Examinations,” said a CBSE official.

“Preparing for various competitive examinations, these dummy students do not attend classes in the school but attend coaching classes. The proper schooling of a child is of utmost importance for the child to learn various life skills,” the official added.
