As the campaign for Sunday’s municipal elections entered its last phase,candidates and their supporters served up a final effort to connect with voters,frequently over food and cold drinks.

The loudspeakers fell silent at 10 pm,but quiet planning and strategising went on late into the night,with plans for prabhat pheris in small mohalla groups chalked up for tomorrow.

Congress candidate from Pusa Road Prem Lata said she gets food from home for supporters who accompany her on long campaign visits around the ward. “We cook at home for 15-20 people who walk with me. People from the ward too offer us food,” she said.

Nutan Kocchar,Congress candidate from Hauz Rani,said she takes along pakoras and tea during campaigning. “If possible,we also take along dal and rice to feed 15-20 people,” Kochhar said.

Subhash Arya,BJP candidate from Rajouri Garden,said meals are always community affairs to which people of the ward as well as his supporters contribute. “Wherever we go,people offer us cold drinks,ice cream and tea. We sit and drink and eat with them. Our supporters too get food,” Arya said.

An official of the State Election Commission said candidates mindful of possible violations of the model code of conduct frequent devise other ways to sponsor lunches for supporters and voters. “There are many religious sects,and arranging a bhandara or a langar under their auspices is an option candidates exercise,” the official said.

Congress candidate from Safdarjung Enclave Aman Arora met supporters,voters and acquaintance for a langar at the Bada Gurudwara in Arjun Nagar.

Candidates continued to reach out to voters till late on Friday evening. “Voters in slums stay awake till late,and I will use the last hours of campaigning in these areas. I have organised small meetings of 15-20 women. I will go door to door and ask them to vote to make their surroundings better,” said Rekha Gupta,the BJP candidate from Pitampura North.

Prem Lata too said she would meet women of her ward late in the evening.
