Labourer dies after falling from over 40 feet while working at Delhi-Mumbai Expressway construction site

A 29-year-old labourer died after he fell from a height of over 40 feet while working on a pillar at a construction site on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, said police.

Identified as Sachin, a resident of Sultanpuri, he was working for a private firm. “Sachin was employed with a private company, which is working on a section of the expressway under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) project,” read the statement of the Delhi Police.

“On Saturday, around 9.30 am, the deceased was working on a pillar, shifting the jack at a height of about 40 to 45 feet. Suddenly, the jack slipped and Sachin fell from the pillar. He was taken to the Holy Family Hospital, where he was declared dead,” DCP (South East) Hemant Tiwari said. He was rushed to the hospital by his coworkers.

Police received a call from the hospital at about 1:30 pm on Saturday about the death. Sachin hailed from Bulandshahr in UP and was in Delhi to work on the project.

Police have registered an FIR under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 209 of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

Officers said they would investigate if safety protocols were followed at the site and if there was any negligence on the part of the company.
