2 weeks after L-G’s order on ‘illegal immigrants from Bangladesh’, 28-year-old woman set to be deported from Delhi
According to the police, Sonali Sheikh was found staying in Delhi without any document to prove she was an Indian. Sheikh allegedly came to India around six years ago from Bangladesh’s Narail district.

Two weeks after the L-G Secretariat in Delhi directed that a special drive be launched to identify and act against “illegal immigrants from Bangladesh” staying in the national capital, the Delhi Police said on Friday that one such immigrant is set to be deported soon.
The police identified the woman as Sonali Sheikh, 28, and said that she was staying in Delhi’s Ruchi Vihar area without any valid documents to support her claim of being an Indian.
According to the police, this is the first official deportation order issued in Delhi’s South West district since the L-G’s orders.
“The FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) has already issued an order to place the immigrant in Sewa Sadan in Shahzada Bagh. She was taken from the FRRO office to the Sewa Sadan and is currently there awaiting deportation,” a police official said.
“Usually, even illegal immigrants have Aadhaar cards made in border states like Assam and West Bengal. But in this case, she did not have any,” a police officer who was part of the drive in the South West district said.
Sheikh allegedly came to India around six years ago from Bangladesh’s Narail district with her father, mother and younger brother. She initially settled in Mumbai with her family and worked as a domestic help, a police official said. “Her father died three years later, making her the only breadwinner of the family. Due to expenses in the city, she sent her mother and younger brother back to Narail and started sending them money from India,” the official added.
Around a year and a half ago, Sheikh shifted to Delhi and stayed in the Ruchi Vihar area of Mahipalpur where she worked as a ragpicker while looking for a job as a domestic help, the police said.
The anti-narcotics cell of the Delhi Police South West district, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Surendra Choudhary, caught Sheikh on Wednesday during a drive against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh based on the LG secretariat’s December 10 order.
“The deportee, Ms Sonali, was found residing in a jhuggi in Ruchi Vihar, thereby violating the provisions of the Foreigners Act,” DCP Choudhary said.
Since the December 10 order, the Delhi Police has launched district-wise drives to spot and deport any illegal immigrants living in the national capital.
