Key South Delhi roads to get a ‘green’ makeover

According to officials, due to soaring heat this summer, many plants on the central verges, sidewalks and roads have dried up. “As the monsoon is here, it is the best time for plantation and increase the green belt,” an official said.

Over 25,000 shrubs, several varieties of bougainvillea, and indigenous species: The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to transform key South Delhi stretches — Mathura Road, Lodhi Road, BRT corridor, Avenue Road, Aurobindo Marg — into a green belt by planting over 6 lakh plants and trees, said officials.

According to officials, due to soaring heat this summer, many plants on the central verges, sidewalks and roads have dried up. “As the monsoon is here, it is the best time for plantation and increase the green belt,” an official said.

The official also added that this time, they are planning to plant grown native trees such as Neem, Kachnar, Amaltash, Pilkhan (Ficus infectoria), Kadam (Neolamarckia cadamba), and Calliandra measuring between 50 cm and 165 cm. These plants will be installed in earthen pots measuring 25-30 cm. Where there is space, they will be planted on the ground.

“These plants will also help to curb dust pollution and will be pleasing to the eyes of commuters travelling on the stretches…,” said the officials.

Officials said to ensure their upkeep, the department will use water tankers having a capacity of 10,000 litres and an inspection vehicle will oversee their maintenance.

“Besides new plantations, the department will also prune and trim grown trees that cover street lights leading to dark spots after getting permission from the forest department and the government… The main objective is also to fill the gaps, so dense plantations and existing trees will also be maintained,” said officials.

The department is also planning to carry out comprehensive repair and maintenance of all road stretches in South, Southeast and Southwest Delhi. As part of this, the department will strengthen roads and add bituminous layers where the stretch is peeling off for a pothole-free and smooth ride. Footpaths will also be repaired to improve walkability for pedestrians, said officials.

Officials said the work is being done in different phases. In the first phase, 60 roads, spanning 167.65 km, will be revamped. These include 21 stretches in South Delhi, 16 in West, and 8 in North and Northwest Delhi.

“Tenders have been floated for roads in South, West and some North Delhi road stretches…,” said a senior official.

The road stretches up for a revamp include Modi Mill to Chirag Dilli; Mehrauli Mahipalpur Road; Ring Road from B-avenue flyover and Hyatt flyover; Ring Road from Bhairon Road to Ashram; Mathura Road NH-2; Panchsheel Enclave; and Panchsheel Club to Joseph Broz Tito Marg.

Meanwhile, PWD Minister Atishi on Monday approved the upgradation and strengthening of a 4-km-long stretch from Prembari Pul to Punjabi Bagh roundabout on the Ring Road in Northwest Delhi.
