The entire Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) community including teachers, students and the administration on Monday welcomed JNU’s ranking as the top central university in the country as per the first-ever domestic ranking released by the Centre.

JNU and the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) were ranked among the top central universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework which covered 3,500 institutes. Both universities have been embroiled in controversies, with JNU being termed by some as a “den of anti-nationals”.

JNUSU General Secretary Rama Naga also welcomed the ranking but said it betrayed the contradiction of the MHRD.

“Some of the criteria on which these rankings were given included campus democracy and institutional autonomy. It is contradictory that the MHRD which awarded JNU high ranking on these grounds, is also the one attacking these elements,” he said.

”They should make sure our funds and fellowships are not cut, because that is what makes it possible for students to perform the way they do,” he added.
