A total of 7,751 students are likely to vote in the upcoming students union elections at Jawaharlal Nehru University that is to be held on March 22, said the election committee of the university on Wednesday.

Shailendra Kumar, chairperson of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) election committee who is also a fourth year PhD student at the university, told The Indian Express that these are the latest figures of candidates who are eligible to vote.

“This is not the final list yet…In the coming days, a few names will be deducted and added as the confirmation with the respective departments,” Kumar added.

“For instance, if a student has submitted his/her PhD today, he/she will no longer be a student of the university. Hence, we will be updating this list in the coming days with additions and deductions. A date is not set yet,” he said.

The JNU election committee was constituted last month for the smooth conduct of the polls, which is being held after a gap of four years.

According to the JNUSU election schedule, candidates will be able to file nominations from March 14. The final list of candidates for JNUSU polls 2023 will be displayed on March 16. A University Governing Body Meeting (UGBM) will be held on March 20, followed by the presidential debate, the notice added. Once the student votes are in, the counting of votes will begin on March 20.

An advisory was released late on Monday evening which read: “In view of the ongoing students’ election process on campus and various events being organised by the student bodies, all campus stakeholders are appealed to remain vigilant and contribute to maintaining peace and harmony on campus. Your cooperation in upholding a peaceful and disciplined campus is crucial”.
