Students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a university-wide strike Wednesday demanding for JNU Student Union (JNUSU) elections to be conducted on an immediate basis with an autonomous student election committee.

A statement released by the current union Thursday morning said, “Students boycotted their class en masse and joined the protest gathering called by JNUSU at the SL-SIS Lawns. The overwhelming participation of students across centres and schools in the protest and the success of our strike is a testament to the collective strength, resilience, and commitment of the JNU student body.”

The student elections have not been held after 2019 citing limitations due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The statement further said, “While in the current semester, elections are being denied citing the need for PhD admissions, in the last semester, the JNU Admin refused to conduct the election despite the completion of the PhD admission process. It is a complete failure of the JNU Administration that they have failed to restore timely admissions for all JNU students to JNU.”

The university has still not announced a set date and deadline for PhD admissions. “In Delhi University the elections for DUSU were held recently, however, JNU students are being deprived of the same right,” the statement read.

The JNUSU called for a University General Body Meeting (UGBM) of students on 18th September 2023. The UGBM is the highest decision-making body of JNU students.

“A massive UGBM of students passed several resolutions demanding immediate JNUSU elections that were duly submitted to the Vice-Chancellor on 26th September 2023. In the absence of any progress since then, the JNUSU called for a strike to demand the immediate restoration of our democratic processes” the union said in its statement Thursday.
