The ongoing agitation in Assam over the Centre’s September 7 notification to the state administration, regularising the entry of all non-Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan, has spilled over to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus.

Several tribal Assamese and Left students’ groups condemned the “undemocratic and communal” decision.

They also called it a violation of the Assam Accord of 1985 and demanded that the issue of illegal immigration be dealt with according to the accord.

Sandipan Talukdar from the All India Students’ Association said, “They say it’s being done on humanitarian grounds but why only for a certain section of the population? Where were humanitarian concerns when Rohingya refugees from Myanmar were stranded on international waters?”
