Political nit-picking in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has begun with parties blaming each other for the delay in conducting JNU students union elections. All India Students Association (AISA),Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students Federation (AISF) on Wednesday called off their strike after assurance from the university that the date of elections will be notified immediately after consultations with its legal counsel.
Dean of Students Abdul Nafey said a letter, signed by him and the rector, was sent to the students. The letter stated that the process of constituting a grievance redressal system,as recommended by the Lyngdoh Committee, has begun.
The student organisations see this as a success of their agitation. The struggle of the student community has forced the administration to address our demands, the Joint Students Committee (JSC) said.
Meanwhile, other parties like NSUI said the protest on campus, even after the Supreme Court allowed special concessions to JNU,can invite another stay order from the apex court Who will take responsibility if another stay order is issue? said ABVP Vice-President Abhishek. He also said the protest was meaningless as the university never denied that it would hold elections. The administration only said they were seeking time to get clearance from the SC.
ABVP and NSUI had expressed reservations in participating in the strike called by AISA,AISF and SFI. The parties did not participate in the hunger strike called by the others.
JNU General Secretary Iqbal Singh said the left organisations are running a propaganda on the campus as nothing is in the V-Cs hands entirely. The V-C has been repeating that the matter will be decided after consulting with the courts.
