The neighbours heard her cries, but dismissed them as another outburst of a person suffering from depression. Rani had been diagnosed with chronic depression 10 years ago.
Rani died later at the hospital.
Around half hour before they attacked Rani, the gang of robbers had broken into another house in the locality and stabbed 65-year-old Shanti Devi to death,in her Pocket G-30 house.
A wallet that the gang stole from Shantis house was found at Ranis home, allowing police to connect the dots.
Outer Delhi police are now on high alert and have conducted several raids to nab the desperate robbers, who murdered the two women within a span of 25 minutes,a police officer said.
Police were told that three robber had broken into Shantis house around 1.30 am,after undoing the latch on the door.
My mother slept in the hall. It appears that the robbers opened the latch of the door by slipping their hand through the window. My younger brother woke up when he heard noises and saw a man in his room. He caught hold of the man while my mother, who was in the hall, raised the alarm. The other two robbers freed their accomplice from my brothers hold and on their way out stabbed my mother in the back, said Dilip Kumar,Shantis son.
The incident was reported around 1.30 am and the robber fled with two wallets, police said.
Shanti was rushed to Jaipur Golden Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
At 1.55 am,the police control room received another call. This time to report a break-in at Ranis house. Police said the gang entered Ranis house by removing the window mesh. They took a few silver coins and Rs 1,000 from the house and were escaping when Rani woke up,police said.
Ranis daughter Jyoti Satija said,My mother lived on the ground floor, and other family members on the first and second floors. One of robbers stabbed her in the stomach and back.
When her screams did not draw any help,a critically injured Rani walked up to the first floor and rang the doorbell of the house where Satijas mother-in-law was sleeping.
Ten years ago,my mother slipped into depression. My in-laws and husband came to stay here,to be close to her. We were on the first and second floors and did not hear her scream. The neighbours told us today that they heard her calling for help, but dismissed it, Satija said.
Rani was rushed to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital where she succumbed to injuries.
Two cases of murder have been registered and police sources said seven persons had been detained for questioning. DCP (Outer) B S Jaiswal said,The two cases have been committed by the same gang and the same weapon was used.
