Inquiry indicts contractor, project officials for pit death

Nearly a week after four children drowned in a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) pit in Timarpur area of North Delhi,an internal inquiry by the Board has indicted the private contractor for lack of safety provisions at the site.

The committee findings have also indicted the supervising DJB staff of the project for lack of supervision,a senior DJB official told Newsline on Friday.

“The private contractor will have to undergo a debarment procedure and an internal debarment committee would take a decision on the matter in 15 days,” the official added.

The DJB staff under scanner will go through an internal inquiry, the proceedings of which are likely to take a maximum of two months.

“The vigilance committee will take disciplinary action against the staff for negligence of duty. Punishment would be given once the departmental proceedings are over,” the official said.

On March 5,four children had drowned in a 15 foot-deep pit dug by the DJB in Gopalpur village in Timarpur. The site was being used by a private contractor to replace and shift a 1,100-mm diameter main pipeline from the Wazirabad water treatment plant near Wazirabad and Gopalpur villages.

The project site was given by the Department of Flood and Irrigation to the DJB for the project and after completion, was handed back to the department on February 26.
