Deepak Kashyap joined as a stenographer in the Income Tax Department in 2012 and was promoted to the post of personal secretary later. Delhi Police arrested him on Saturday, around two years after he allegedly orchestrated an extortion attempt on a businessman in the capital.

According to the police, Kashyap was first arrested in 2023 along with his band of associates after they barged into the businessman’s house claiming to be conducting an income tax raid.

“On August 8, 2023, the accused entered the Janakpuri residence of a businessman who owns an elevator and escalator manufacturing company. His wife was the only one present at the house. She informed him that seven unknown individuals, including a woman, had forcibly entered their residence, claiming to be from the Income Tax Department,” said DCP (Crime) Aditya Gautam.

The accused then allegedly restrained the businessman’s wife, seizing her phones and preventing her from contacting the outside world. On Kashyap’s instructions, the accused rang up the businessman to come to his home immediately to strike a “deal”.x`

“Using his official knowledge and position as leverage, Deepak assembled a group of accomplices—posing as Income Tax and government officials —to lend legitimacy to their unlawful operation. He was arrested in August 2023 but released on bail,” DCP Gautam said.

On November 8, 2023, Kashyap was declared a proclaimed offender by a Dwarka court after he jumped bail and failed to appear in the court.

On Saturday, a Crime Branch team led by ACP Ramesh Lamba and Inspector Pankaj Malik received a tip-off about Kashyap’s movement in the Subzi Mandi area of Delhi. A trap was laid and he was arrested.
