Olympic successes inspire Team Sky
Team Sky boss Dave Brailsford took inspiration from the British teams track successes at the Olympic Games to build the strongest road racing team in the world. Team Sky riders showed their superiority during Saturdays first mountain stage of the race as Bradley Wiggins earned Britain its first yellow jersey in 12 years and Christopher Froome claimed the stage win in the ski resort of La Planche des Belles Filles. We’ve got experience in the Olympic Games more than here, said Brailsford, the man who masterminded the British harvest of medals in Beijing four years ago as British Cyclings performance director. What we know about the Olympics,is that its a big stage. But if you start to treat it differently from any other event, youre in trouble. For us (this is) just another bike race, and we are going to keep doing what we normally do,and do not do anything differently just because it’s called the Tour de France.
Spain set sights on Olympic gold
Spain wants to follow up its European Championship victory with an Olympics triumph. The World Cup champions won an unprecedented third straight major title after defeating Italy in Euro 2012. That authoritative victory of Spains senior team made the countrys Olympic squad eager to play for gold at the London Games. Spain forward Iker Muniain said: Were starting an adventure that were very motivated to get started on and finish with a medal, Muniain said.
Smoke in the water
The Olympic torch in its ceremonial procession around the world has been transported in a number of unusual ways. In 1976,the torch was sent through satellite from Greece to Canada where it was ignited through a laser beam. The famous Concorde aircraft flying at Mach 2 was also the mode of transport for the torch. In 2000,the torch went underwater, burning under the Great Barrier Reef. One of the more spectacular transits took place in 1994,with two parachute jumpers exchanging the torch mid-air.
Bridges of light
London will be gearing up for a visual treat which will last a good month and a half. Londons bridges, amongst them the iconic Tower Bridge, will be lit up in various hues in order to celebrate the Olympics. July 21 onwards,an evening walk along the Thames will leave people with some breathtaking visuals. Seven bridges over the Thames will be lit up with a variety of lights. The Tower Bridge will be of particular interest as the 19th century landmark will be lit up in a special way so as to showcase the Olympic rings and the Paralympic agitos mounted on the Bridge.
