The Delhi government expects to cover over five lakh families under the Centre’s food security scheme in the first phase of implementation.

The Delhi government expects to cover over five lakh families under the Centre’s food security scheme in the first phase of implementation. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit chaired a meeting on the scheme’s implementation on Thursday, with all relevant departments,to finalise the modalities and identify the scheme’s beneficiaries.

“The scheme will be implemented in two phases — 5.21 lakh families in the first phase will include BPL and APL card holders and beneficiaries under the Antyodaya Anna Yojna,” a senior official said.

The official also said Delhi’s homeless, daily wage labourers, rag pickers, slum dwellers and families in resettlement colonies would be covered in the second phase, which will begin in February,2014.

The Congress in Delhi hopes to highlight the benefits under the scheme in the run up to the Assembly elections slated for November this year, and maintain the momentum for the Lok Sabha polls in 2014.

According to the sources in the government, income tax payers, vehicle and house owners would not be included under the scheme in the first phase.

Beneficiaries under the Delhi government’s Annashree Yojna, who get a monthly cash subsidy of Rs 600,also might be left out in the first phase.

Dikshit also issued directions to all relevant departments and agencies concerned to ensure all preparations for rolling out the food scheme were completed before its launch on August 20.
