BJP leaders at Narendra Modis rally were left embarrassed when one of their most publicised cut-out of the partys prime ministerial candidate was torn by the wind even before he arrived at the venue. Incidentally, the BJP had created a lot of hype around the 100-feet cut-out and even issued a press release calling it an achievement. When the poster tore, leaders tried to do some damage control by sending people to remove it as soon as possible. But,it had already become the butt of many a joke, one of which compared it to the title of a recent bollywood, calling it Phata poster nikla Modi.
Cause lost
Tactful cop
This Deputy Commissioner of Police is known to be a stickler for rules. When a member of a religious association invited him to attend a jagran, the DCP agreed, but cautioned,10 baje sab bandh (The function should be wrapped up by 10 pm). The member laughed and said,Ma se bada koi nai (no one greater than the goddess). To this, the DCP said,Aur ma bhi yahi chahegi ki jagran 10 pm ko bandh ho jaye, warna sab zabardasti bandh karna padega (Even the goddess would want you to follow rules and finish the jagran at 10 pm).
Legal tussle
Long after the conviction of the men accused in the December 16 gangrape case, the courts are still feeling the repercussions of the huge public outcry the case generated. In fact, the media glare and the public interest in the case led to intense lobbying among prosecutors when the death sentence reference and appeals came up for hearing in the High Court. So much so,that the prosecution department was locked in a tussle late on Sunday over who would represent the state during the hearing, which had been scheduled on Monday. Ultimately, the Delhi Police decided to continue with the lawyer who had earlier represented the state in the trail court.
Number hierarchy
There was confusion at the Police Headquarters after Delhi Police Commissioner decided to reshuffle the mobile phone numbers of all senior officers. It was rather comical when several journalists called up to speak to a certain officer, only to find someone else at the other end of the line. It is believed that the numbers have been assigned according to the seniority of officers, with the commissioners number ending with 1. It is then followed by the phone number of his immediate junior, the Special Commissioner (administration),which ends with 2. And the trend continues.
Double role
Complainants curse me….judges pass adverse orders….I feel like the victim and the villain these days, a public prosecutor was heard saying while he complained about the lack of prosecutorial staff at district courts. This public prosecutor, who practices in two courts,is constantly shuttling between them. His presence being mandatory at two different places at the same time leads to cases being adjourned and, hence,is a cause of displeasure of both judges and complainants. What cause of justice do I serve if I keep running around uselessly the whole day, the prosecutor, who is struggling to manage between two courts, said.
Space constraint
The National Green Tribunal hearing the case on Hauz Khas eateries sorely stretched the limited space designated to the tribunal at the Bhikaji Cama Centre. The room could barely accommodate the scores of restaurant owners who had turned up for the hearing. Inside court, each owner tried to convince the NGT that his or her case was different from other errant eateries. Once outside, the stories were retold with in a merry manner, much to the amusement of the security staff there.
