While India is pitching itself as a global technology hub, its cities continue to struggle to meet the rapidly growing demands of citizens. The challenges before Indian cities are ramping up with each passing year. The range of these challenges is also increasing: From adequately providing basic amenities such as water, electricity, waste disposal to efficiently solving for housing and transportation to containing emissions, dealing with climate change and managing inequality.

The key question is: How can technology improve India’s urbanisation?

According to the Smart Cities initiative by the national government, Ahmedabad was ranked the sixth best among all states in 2016. It has introduced several technology-driven solutions ranging from transit management, city surveillance, e-governance, Integrated Command and Control Centres, digital payments in utilities.

What can Indian cities learn from the Ahmedabad experience? What kind of solutions can technology provide? How can policymakers leverage technology to find solutions to India’s urbanisation challenges? These will be some key questions discussed in the fifth edition of The Indian Express’s THINC: CITIES seminar series, presented by Omidyar Network India, to be organised in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

The seminar will feature a keynote address by Keshav Varma, Chairman, High-Level Committee on Urban Planning of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. It will be followed by a panel discussion on how Indian cities can leverage technology to improve urbanisation.

The panel of experts will feature Jagan Shah (CEO, The Infravision Foundation and former Director, National Institute of Urban Affairs), Saswat Bandyopadhyay (Professor, Faculty of Planning and Project Director, CUPP, CEPT University), Shalini Agrawal (Municipal Commissioner, Surat), and Anupamkumar Singh (Dean, Academics, Professor, Civil & Infrastructure Engineering, Adani University).

The seminar will be moderated by Udit Misra, Associate Editor, The Indian Express.
