Professor J K Bajaj, who was appointed as the Chairperson of the Indian Council for Social Sciences Research (ICSSR) in 2022 tendered his resignation a year after his appointment, on August 2.
Bajaj was appointed to the post by the Ministry of Education in 2022, for a period of three years.
He was the 15th chairperson of the ICSSR, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education established in 1969 to promote research in social sciences in the country.
Bajaj was also a Director of Centre for Policy Studies in Chennai.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Bajaj said that he resigned because he had been away from home for too long, and also wanted to return to his work at Centre for Policy Studies in Chennai.
Bajaj was also a member of the backward classes commission to examine sub-categorization of OBCs since 2017. He told The Indian Express that the report of the commission was submitted on July 31.
Bajaj said he’s yet to get a response from the ministry regarding accepting his resignation.
With a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the Punjab University, Prof Bajaj has written and edited books on religious demography and economy.
He has authored numerous books in the past, including Religious Demography of India; Timeless India Resurgent India: A Celebration of the Land and People of India; Annam Bahu Kurvita: Recollecting the Indian Discipline of Growing and Sharing Food in Plenty, amongst others.
