Buying stolen phones from thieves and snatchers in Delhi, smuggling them to Nepal, and selling them at double the price — a husband-wife duo was allegedly making quick money from this racket. Until they, along with their two associates, landed in the police net.

DCP (Crime) Rakesh Pawaria said, “On May 19, at 3.35 pm, the special staff of the Central district received a tip-off regarding one Arjun… who would come in a grey Swift car to Kamla Market to send snatched or stolen mobile phones to a market in Nepal by bus or train. We were told he may also possess an illegal weapon… Arjun is involved in cases of attempt to murder, snatching, robbery, theft, and the Arms Act.”

On May 19, the team immediately intercepted the car near the spot and arrested Arjun and his wife Ruksar. When Arjun was searched, police found a loaded pistol along with seven live rounds. In his car, they found a cache of stolen mobile phones — 150 devices of various brands — 140 adapters of mobile chargers and 90 USB cables concealed within cartons in the trunk.

During questioning, police claimed Arjun alias Vikas said he and his wife were actively engaged in smuggling stolen mobile phones to Nepal through Bihar’s Madhubani.

“To make a good profit, he involved his wife and a friend, Himanshu alias Mota. They contacted persons involved in theft, robbery and snatching and started buying expensive stolen mobile phones from them for Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000. These phones were then sold in Nepal for Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 through other associates,” said an officer.

“Arjun claimed four-five days ago, Himanshu went to Nepal to sell 90 stolen mobile phones… on Monday, he and Ruksar were going to sell/deliver the phones from Paharganj to New Delhi railway station in his car when they were caught. At his instance, 51 more mobile phones were recovered, amounting to a total of 201,” added the officer.

Police said they found that Himanshu was returning from Nepal to Delhi on the Swatantrata Senani Express train. “The team reached Ghaziabad railway station and boarded the same train. It checked the train, identified Himanshu, and arrested him. Around 25 snatched/stolen phones were recovered from his possession,” said the officer.

Another man involved in the racket, Jagarnath Kumar Yadav (28), a resident of Madhubani, was arrested from the Nepal border. A total of 226 stolen phones were recovered from him, police said
