Red tape continues to choke the healthcare system at the Delhi government’s only trauma centre — Sushruta. With the posts of anesthetists and neurosurgeons still lying vacant, nearly 10 patients are waiting for surgery at present.

Newsline had earlier reported the trauma centre has no neurosurgeons, only one anesthetist, and defunct ultrasound and CT scan machines. According to the hospital management, doctors have been selected for the posts, but the letters are yet to be dispatched.

The patients, meanwhile, will have to wait a little longer.

“It is true that many patients are being forced to wait for surgeries. We have selected the candidates through interviews but the letters have not been sent. I got them signed on Friday, and we will dispatch the letters next week,” Centre’s Medical Superintendent Dr Amit Gupta said.

Bureaucratic hurdles have also been tripping the replacement, repair and maintenance of hospital’s equipment. The Centre’s CT scan machine has been defunct for over a month and the hospital’s deadline to replace it is August 31.

“We had issued tenders but there were some problems. We have now issued fresh tenders and by next week, the second tenders will open. In any case, tender procedures take months and procuring equipment through government channels is a long process,” Dr Gupta added.

The hospital is also in line for renovation and sources said nearly Rs 10 crore has been allocated for the project. This is above the Rs 9 crore allocated for purchase of three CT scan machines.

“Instead of investing in manpower and equipment, they want to renovate a building, which is perfectly fine,” said a senior doctor working in the trauma centre.
