Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Sunday said her government had brought about a change in the city with the celebration of the Hindu New Year for the first time.

Speaking at the Vidhan Sabha, where the event was held, Gupta said, “The people of Delhi are witnessing this change for the first time that Hindu New Year is being celebrated with much fanfare. This is not just a festival, it is our association with Indian traditions, and an opportunity to get the coming generations rooted in our culture.”

A performance of devotional and other songs by singer Kailash Kher and his band Kailasa was part of the celebrations. The CM also said that the government will celebrate the festival every year.

Art and Culture Minister Kapil Mishra said the Delhi government will also organise events on the occasion of Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Baisakhi, and Ambedkar Jayanti.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, meanwhile, said there was a need to prepare a “national cultural policy” to ensure “cultural literacy”.
“Indian civilisation has withstood every test of time, and it is our responsibility to preserve its traditions and values. The new generation is increasingly becoming disconnected from its roots due to modern technological influences, and connecting them with Indian culture is today’s greatest challenge,” he added.
