PWD has 256 permanent pumps and 196 temporary pumps to drain out water from the arterial roads, 15 more pumps have been installed this year.
As parts of Delhi became waterlogged after heavy rains Thursday, officials in the Public Works Department (PWD) blamed the municipal corporations, claiming they were not desilting clogged drains in time.
On what transpired during meetings the Delhi government had held with various agencies to prevent waterlogging during monsoon, a PWD official said, “What can we do when they don’t do their jobs? Fifty per cent of Delhi doesn’t even have a sewerage system. We are desilting drains … but we are not supposed to do that. When the accumulated garbage of an entire colony is dumped in their drains and the corporations don’t bother cleaning it, it turns to sludge and automatically ends up in our drains,” said the official.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) also contributed to the problem of waterlogging, claimed PWD officials. “They dig up whichever part of the city they want to… we can’t stop them,” said the official.
On the measures taken by the PWD to ensure that residents of Delhi face fewer hassles during monsoon, the official said, “We have installed more suction pumps. Irrespective of which agency is in charge of the water-logged roads, people will be able to lodge their complaints at the call centre.”
He said while the PWD has 256 permanent pumps and 196 temporary pumps to drain out water from the arterial roads, 15 more pumps have been installed this year. “In crowded points such as Moolchand, Dhaula Kuan flyover, Ring Road and ITO, there are permanent suction pumps,” said the official.
