A 42-year-old man was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.6 crore on the pretext of employment opportunity in Gurgaon, police said.
Police said that Surjeet Singh, a Mohammadpur resident, was allegedly defrauded of Rs 1.6 crore after he got a message on WhatsApp for a part-time job with an e-commerce site.
According to the complainant, on June 25, he was allegedly offered a part-time job offer at an e-commerce site by a caller from an unknown number on WhatsApp, The accused claimed to have gotten the number from the victim’s friend. “They sent a link and on clicking it, the e-commerce platform opened. I was told to purchase the articles they mentioned by clicking on this link. I was told to take a screenshot of this and send it on WhatsApp. They promised to give me a commission for this. I initially sent Rs 5,000, in return they gave me Rs 6,110 and in this way, I kept clicking on the link they sent and they sent me a total of Rs 26,000,” he stated. Later, the accused told the victim that they have wrongly withdrawn the payment, and he will have to do more tasks as a penalty.
“I was promised a window to withdraw the whole amount together, but he said that my store account was frozen and I will have to deposit more money as security. I kept sending money in various transactions… A total of about Rs 1 crore 60 lakh have been cheated from me online,” the complainant stated.
“We have details of transactions and bank accounts, and are probing the case,” an officer privy to the case said.
An FIR under IPC sections 419 and 420, and 66D of IT Act has been registered at Manesar cyber police station.
