Gurgaon gang war: Police look into ‘gangster’ diaries, allegations of corruption against officers

The diaries could open unearth a huge bribe racket amongst police, said a senior officer.

A week after the Gurgaon police found ‘six diaries’ from the hideouts of “gangster” Sandeep Gadoli — who allegedly plotted against city ward councillor Binder Gujjar — forensic, cyber and crime teams have been tasked with verifying the ‘facts and figures’ mentioned in these diaries.

The diaries could open unearth a huge bribe racket amongst police, said a senior officer. Police have launched an investigation into the “corrupt” nexus of officers and criminals. The inquiry is likely to be marked to an IPS- rank officer, sources said.

On October 4, Gujjar’s driver Ashok Kumar was shot dead allegedly by Gadoli’s men. In a retaliatory attack within hours, Gadoli’s accomplice Manish Khurana suffered injuries when he was shot outside his home allegedly by the councillor’s aides.

According to sources, the ‘diaries’ were found in Khurd Gadoli village and his Gadoli’s ‘factory’ in Bhiwani, Rajasthan.

Sources said the diaries are said to contain names of a number of officials and industrialists, along with the amount of money allegedly paid to them as bribes and ‘protection money’ by Gadoli.

Sources said the diaries also contain records of money given to police officers of joint commissioner, ACP and senior inspector ranks.
Sources added that the diaries have been labeled as ‘Hit List’, ‘Vasooli (extortion) List’, ‘Hathiyaar (arms and ammunition) list, with one diary listing Gadoli’s own crimes. The notebook, however, does not carry the actual names of the officers who allegedly took the bribes, but lists them by designation.

“The diaries have records from 2006, 2007 and 2009. It has also been mentioned that monthly kickbacks were given to inspector-rank officials to run the extortion business smoothly. Gadoli, in some of the pages, has also mentioned names of some hideouts,” said a senior officer. He added that some of these run into lakhs, with some senior officers listed as having received crores of rupees.

Further investigation into the case revealed that Gadoli made around Rs 3.5 crore every month from his extortion business. “On his extortion list were some leading jewellers, sweetshop owners and property dealers -mostly in old Gurgaon,” said the official. A source said one such diary also mentions that a “Gurgaon DIG has been paid Rs 18 lakh”.

In his ‘hit list’ diary, sources said names of 40 people have been mentioned. “Out of these, most of the names have been struck out leaving behind only 16 names. Binder Gujjar tops the list right now and the name of Gujjar’s driver was also mentioned — who was killed in the gangwar last Sunday,” said the officer.
