Traffic crawled near the Sirhaul tollgate and Kherki Dhaula on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on Monday for close to seven hours because a truck got stuck in a road cave-in and diversions made for the construction of Rapid Metro.
Commuters and office-goers were stranded for hours. This included Suzuki Motor Corporation chairman Osamu Suzuki, who was on his way to Marutis Manesar plant. While the queues of vehicles stretched for more than 2 km near Sirhaul tollgate, traffic crawled from Hero Honda Chowk till Manesar because of waterlogging on the Delhi-Jaipur highway.
The snarl at Kherki Dhaula tollgate continued till Monday evening. There are potholes on the road and a truck was stuck in a cave-in. However, the situation was brought under control after afternoon, Kherki Dhaula traffic sub-inspector Subhash Dagar said. The Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited (DGSCL),which manages the expressway, said traffic diversions for the ongoing Rapid Metro construction near Sirhaul tollgate led to the mess on Monday.
But traffic police said a truck got stuck when a portion of the road caved in because of the heavy rains. This triggered almost 2-km-long snarls from Hero Honda Chowk to Kherki Dhaula tollgate and beyond. At one point of time, the long line of vehicles reached Manesar.
Rapid Metro officials dismissed the DGSCLs allegation, saying there was no diversion in place on Monday.
The last diversion was made around 15 days ago. It was planned one and didnt disrupt traffic, a Rapid Metro spokesperson said.
A DGSCL spokesperson said a slip road into Cybercity triggered the snarl. This was built because of the Rapid Metro construction. The slip road is narrow and cannot accommodate Monday traffic. This led to congestion. Moreover, the slip road is broken and has potholes, he said.
The DGSCL has been drawing flak for improper traffic management and a case regarding this is already being heard in court.
Some commuters, who were stuck for three hours at a stretch, said poor traffic management at Sirhaul toll plaza aggravated the situation. I left my office in Ambience Mall in the evening. It has been 40 minutes already and I have not been able to reach the tollgates, one of them said.
