On Thursday,Lodhi Road missed a grand kushti contest by a whisker.

The combatants were ten hired “pehelwans” — brought in by two students in the best Bollywood tradition to settle a tiff over a girl.

The students concerned were Rumit (19) and Vijay Mann (20),first and second year students of the BBA course. And the trouble had begun after one of them had reportedly brushed shoulders with the other’s girlfriend. This led to an argument and they parted with threats.

“Around 1 pm,each of them brought in five pehelwans in their cars outside the IILM Institute for Higher Learning on Lodhi Road,” said a senior police officer. “But a security guard of the institute spotted them and sensing trouble, immediately called the Police Control Room.”

Just as they were about to “join battle”,a police team arrived and put a stop to it.

All the men — including the two students — were arrested. The latter were booked under Sections 107/51 of the CrPC at the Lodhi Road police station.

They were produced in a city court and later released on bail. Two licensed pistols and several rounds of cartridges were recovered from them, the officer said. The men,the officer said, had been hired for the day. Rumit, the son of an astrologer,is a resident of Karol Bagh. Mann is a resident of Gurgaon. His father is a builder, the officer said.On Thursday,Lodhi Road missed a grand kushti contest by a whisker.
