An auction of antique coins and medals at the Delhi Coin Society’s exhibition nets around Rs 80 lakh

The annual exhibition of the Delhi Coin Society had a new entrant this time. Ahmedabad-based dealer and auction house Classical Numismatic Gallery held its first coins and medals auction on March 15. On March 16,Todywalla,an auction house from Mumbai, will hold its auction.

Unlike art, numismatics is still more a hobby than investment in India but these auctions are attracting an unprecedented amount of interest. Experts say that in the last few years, collectibles — be it rare stamps or antique coins — are being seen as investments, and exhibitions and auctions help generate awareness.

The Classical Numismatic Gallery collection included rare zodiac coins of Jehangir, silver double tanka of Burhan Nizam Shah, double rupee coins of Tipu Sultan and bank notes of the erstwhile Hyderabad state. The highest bid,of Rs 7.5 lakh, was for an “Akbar mohur”,a gold coin from the era of emperor Akbar. “A good coin or currency portfolio can double every three-four years,” says Shatrughan Jain of Classical Numismatic Gallery. Goga Jain,Vice-President of the Delhi Coin Society, cites the Antiquity Act as a deterrent for collectors. Shatrughan says the Union Budget has helped collectors by imposing a 10 per cent import duty on numismatic objects,as this will ensure that genuine buyers aren’t harassed at airports.

The exhibition will be held at NASC Complex, opposite Todapur,PUSA Institute ,till March 17
