Give Me a Five

The dust is finally settling on the film 3 Idiots and its similarity to Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone.

The dust is finally settling on the film 3 Idiots and its similarity to Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone. Now,Chennai-based theatre company Evam Entertainment brings the stage adaptation of the bestseller to Delhi, the city where the adventures of the book unfold in and around IIT. And even Bhagat is cheering. In his blog,he has called the play a “firecracker”.

Director Sunil Vishnu K,33,says,“Like the book, the play focuses on the education system and weaves in campus romances, students’ experiments with alcohol and drugs and peer pressure.” Over 27 scenes in two hours, the play follows IIT students Alok,Ryan and Hari as they get off to a bad start in college — getting ragged and messing up the first class quiz. When they try to make amends, things only get worse. “It takes them a while to realize that if you mess with the IIT system,it comes back to mess with you twice over. Before they know it,they are at the lowest echelons of IIT society,” says Aparna Narayan, manager, brand communications of Evam.

Vishnu,a veteran of 15 plays, says that FPS is very youth-oriented. “It will remind the audience about their own college.” The average age of the actors, too,is low; they are mostly in their early twenties. The play uses lavish lighting and music from Pink Floyd, but minimal sets. “It’s like a rock concert meeting great storytelling,” adds Vishnu.

Work on FPS began in January 2009,when more than 400 aspirants turned up for auditions in Bangalore . Among the 15 who finally landed a part were Delhi youngsters Yudhisthir Rana, who plays the studious Alok, and Mamta Bisht who plays Neha, the main female protagonist. “They wanted somebody plump who could act. I fitted the bill perfectly,” says Rana, who is an executive with Airtel. He read Bhagat’s book around five times and found he understood his character Alok perfectly. “He’s a boy torn between his family duties and his friends who only want to have fun,” says this 23-year-old.

As Bhagat has pointed out in his blog,Evam, formed in 2003,is made up mostly of MBAs who are following their passion for theatre. This is their first national tour, one that’s taken them to Bangalore ,Pune and Chandigarh. This is also the first time Evam will have a major public performance in Delhi.

The play will be staged at LTG from March 12 to 14,and at Kamani Auditorium from April 9-11. Contact: 09840444916
