A young woman from Ghaziabad, aged around 25, died on Saturday, weeks after allegedly being forced to consume acid by her in-laws over dowry demands, police said.

Following her death, her family staged a protest outside the Commissionerate office in the city, accusing the police of negligence and demanding immediate arrests.

According to the victim’s family, she was married to Lalit Verma, a Delhi resident, on February 8 this year. Verma, who runs a mobile phone business in Rajnagar, Ghaziabad, and his family allegedly began demanding cash and an SUV soon after the wedding. Police said the victim’s family has accused Verma’s relatives of assaulting her after they refused to meet the dowry demands.

The family stated that on September 14, Verma informed them that their daughter had consumed acid, police said. She was admitted to hospital, where she remained under treatment until she succumbed on Saturday. An FIR was filed on Saturday at the Crossings Republik police station, but no arrests have been made yet, officers said.

ACP (Wave City) Priyashi Pal said the woman was hospitalised after consuming acid, but later recovered and gave a magisterial statement — once in Delhi and again in Ghaziabad — denying any dowry harassment.

“She had been discharged from hospital, but her condition later deteriorated and she had to be readmitted. She died during treatment. After her death, the family alleged again that dowry was involved,” Pal said.

The ACP added that, based on the family’s allegations, the police will now modify the FIR to include relevant dowry and abetment charges. “A proper investigation will be carried out,” she said.
