Delhi gang war: Gangster Manjeet Mahal’s nephew shot dead in front of daughter, rival claims credit
Delhi Police sources said they suspect the shooters could be linked to the gang of Kapil Sangwan, the longtime rival of jailed mafia don Manjeet Mahal
Jailed mafia don Manjeet Mahal. (File)A 30-year-old man, nephew of jailed gangster Manjeet Mahal, was killed while his seven-year-old daughter was injured by bullet splinters when unidentified men shot at them in Delhi’s Bawana while they were out on a walk on Friday morning, police said.
Police suspect the assailants were from the Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu gang — Mahal’s arch rival. A purported social media account, allegedly of Sangwan — who is hiding in London — has claimed responsibility for the hit.
Police, who identified the deceased as Deepak, suspect that the killers could be the same shooters who had killed a businessman for his links with Mahal in Haridwar earlier this month, allegedly at the behest of Sangwan.
A police officer said the incident took place around 7.30 am when Deepak was on a walk with his daughter, his father Devender, and a friend. “Two men on a bike approached Deepak and fired eight shots. As his father screamed for help, the assailants fled,” the officer added.
While Deepak died on the spot, his daughter sustained injuries to her hand. She was treated and is out of danger, said police. Deepak’s body, meanwhile, has been sent for post-mortem examination.
According to police, Deepak was in the business of buying and selling stocks, and Devender is a retired school teacher.
A post uploaded by the Instagram handle, ‘Kapil sangwan nandu’, claimed that Sangwan and alleged gangster Venkat Garg Narayangarh are behind Deepak’s murder. “The reason (for the shooting is) Manjeet Mahal’s custody parole and meeting with him… As far as Mahal is concerned, I will show what the price of killing someone’s brother-in-law is. Manjeet Mahal, I won’t kill you, but make you shed tears of blood,” the post stated.
It also issued a warning to the residents of Najafgarh’s Mitraon village, stating that anyone from the village who visits Mahal will be “visited” by Nandu gang members. Mahal is from Mitraon, a village infamous for gang wars.
Mahal and Sangwan have been in each other’s crosshairs even before Sangwan fled to the UK.
According to the police, the rivalry started in 2015 over a money-lending dispute. Mahal’s associate allegedly gunned down Sangwan’s brother-in-law over a pending loan. Sangwan then launched a full-scale gang war against Mahal and orchestrated the killing of his father in 2017.
“The gang war between the two has claimed a dozen lives over the years,” an officer said.
In April 2025, a businessman was murdered in Delhi’s Paschim Vihar, with the Nandu gang claiming responsibility on social media, as they suspected he was working for Mahal. In 2023, Sangwan allegedly ordered the killing of a BJP leader for his proximity to Mahal, a police officer said.
