Gambling racket busted,21 held

Twenty one people were arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Thursday for their alleged involvement in a gambling racket.

Twenty one people were arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Thursday for their alleged involvement in a gambling racket. The arrests came after police received information that one Mohammad Usman Haji and his son Mohammad Suleman were operating one of the biggest networks of gambling rackets spread across north Indian states. Police received information that they were operating one such racket in Central Delhi’s Daryaganj area.

“A raid was conducted and 21 persons who were found playing or involved in the ‘matka’ form of gambling underway at the premises were apprehended. Mohammad Haji,a known criminal from the area,however,managed to escape,” additional CP (crime),Ravindra Singh Yadav,said.

Haji’s son Suleman,was nabbed by the police. Others arrested include cashiers,supervisors,managers and the gamblers.

Questioning revealed that Haji had been running the racket for the last three decades,police said.

“The members of the racket would lure gullible people by offering them ten to 80 times the amount placed as a bet. This racket was operating in the national capital region and various towns of Haryana,UP,Punjab and Rajasthan,” Yadav said.

According to police,Haji had enabled several franchisees to run the racket at several locations who would take the bet at their respective locations manually with Haji shuttling from place to place to avoid detection and arrest.
