From India to Delhi

A couple of days off for the players but no rest for you?

*No rest for the wicked (laughs). Yeah… but such a big change,you have two different squads to deal with,so great to be back here. You got to get that celebration out of your system quickly. That will be the same for the players too.

Delhi Daredevils is a new-look side this year. How do you rate this unit?

*It is interesting. There’re a lot younger guys in this group and in many ways this might be the secret to our squad. The main challenge in the IPL is to get 11 players from different backgrounds to play for a common cause. Most of the teams battle to do that so we want our guys pulling in the same direction.

You have eight fast bowlers but will be playing on a slow Ferozeshah Kotla pitch that will be your home ground. Does it all add up well?

*The key for a bowler is to understand his limitations and strengths. So a coach too it is important to understand this. There is not much I can do in terms of making technical changes. But I hope to help bowlers pick up one of two new variations that will help them bowl better . I cannot reinvent a bowler in six weeks.

Morne Morkel,Varun Aaron,Umesh Yadav,Ashok Dinda are all express quick. Does extra pace help in Twenty20?

*A bowler can be quick but must be able to use his pace intelligently. Speed is very important weapon to have but it has to be used judiciously. You got to have Plan B and C in this format. You can’t plan A as bowl fast and Plan B is bowl faster.

How easy or difficult is it to wear different hats as a professional?

*I am here as the Delhi Daredevils coach.,When I am with the Indian team,I am their coach. I coach individuals..I am very much focussed about individuals and guiding them towards a greater team goal. I enjoy being a coach at whatever level it is — school team or the Indian team. I don’t have a problem switching between teams because my philosophy remains the same all the time.
