As the four main intersections in Delhi shut down following the rain on Wednesday, the cascading effect could be seen all over the city, with no vehicular movement on the Ring Road,Outer Ring Road,Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, and till as far as DND Expressway. While the roads all across Central,South and New Delhi were clogged,East Delhi was fortunate enough to see the traffic sail smoothly.

Newsline takes a look at the major problem areas:

DHAULA KUAN to NARAINA
Due to water logging under the Dhaula Kuan flyover,a carriageway towards Naraina had to be shut down from 6 pm to 9.30 pm. The cascading effect of this was seen on the entire Ring Road, right up till the Ashram crossing near the DND Expressway. This further jammed Shanti Path,Africa Avenue,Vinay Marg and Rao Tula Ram Marg. The Moti Bagh-Naraina carriageway, which had to be closed for three hours due to water logging, could only be restored at 9.30 pm.

QUTAB MINAR STATION
From 8 pm to 9.30 pm,both carriageways on the busy Mehrauli-Gurgaon road had to be closed as the road outside the newly-inaugurated Qutab Minar Metro Station had submerged under three feet of water. This had a cascading effect on all traffic towards the Indira Gandhi International Airport and up to the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road. The effect was such that traffic in the entire New Delhi area was also affected.

SRI AUROBINDO MARG
A part of the Sri Aurobindo Marg near the Yusuf Sarai market caved in as a result of a busted storm water drain. Traffic officials had to close both sides of the IIT-AIIMS carriageway from 8 pm to 10 pm,which again had a spiralling effect on traffic movement across South Delhi. This was made worse by the major water-logging at Bhikaji Cama Place. Only one carriageway could be opened up even after 10 pm,that too for just small vehicles.

WAZIRPUR UNDERPASS
The underpass was closed by authorities for four hours due to water-logging. The traffic could at least crawl with a minor diversion provided close to the underpass.
