For the Love of Stones

Now an upcoming Christie’s auction will focus on this region once again at “Magnificent Jewels Spring Auction” in Hong Kong on May 27.

The name Golconda not only conjures up images of forts and historic conquests, but also of its reputation for diamonds. The Koh-i-Noor and the Hope diamond, both originated from the region. Now an upcoming Christie’s auction will focus on this region once again at “Magnificent Jewels Spring Auction” in Hong Kong on May 27. The Eye of the Golconda, a rare diamond necklace from the region whose centrepiece is the largest Golconda diamond ever to be auctioned in Asia, leads this 300-item sale and is estimated to fetch between $ 8,500,000-10,000,000 (Rs 49 crore – Rs 58 crore).

“Golconda diamonds are often described as Diamonds of First Water, characterised by an almost indefinable water-clear appearance that attest to their diaphanous quality rarely seen in stones from other localities,” says the auction catalogue. The Hong Kong auction also includes coloured as well as Type D Flawless diamonds, a range of vividly saturated Burmese rubies and sapphires, Colombian emeralds and exclusive vintage pieces from Bulgari, Harry Winston and Van Cleef & Arpels.

The Eye of Golconda goes on auction on May 27 in Hong Kong.
