Food Court

It takes a brave heart to traverse the lanes of Kamla Nagar in Delhi University in this heat, but if you’re a hungry,home-food-deprived student, that’s a minor hitch. Awaiting the swarming lot of new students on July 16,when the summer session begins, are four spanking new food joints that whip up fancy culinary treats without emptying your wallet.

The Chinjabi lane in “K-Nags” (for the uninitiated, slang for Kamla Nagar) has been an institution for the past decade. Every year a new population of restaurants comes up here, but only those with a pulse on the food pipe of the slightly impoverished yet ravenous DU student can survive. Mandeep Singh and Akhil Malik surveyed all the restaurants in the DU area and decided to open QD’s (short for Quick Dining),a multi-cuisine restaurant in the famed Chinjabi lane. But to be successful, they knew they had to innovate. Voila! And that’s where the highly original Tandoori Momo stems from. “There is a significant population of students from the Northeast who wants its momos and there’s the North Indian crowd who wants their food spicy. So we came up with the Tandoori Momo,” says Singh. The tandoori momos are available in vegetarian (Rs 60) and non-vegetarian (Rs 70) versions. Although the momos taste a tad too much like tandoori chicken or tandoori paneer, this variation on the steamed momo has become the most popular item on the menu. QD’s serves Chinese and Tibetan cuisine,North Indian thalis and Hyderabadi and Kathi rolls. “We’re also the only place here to serve mocktails,Akhil has some bartending experience from his years in Dubai and we wanted to incorporate it,without the alcohol,of course,” smiles Singh. Sip on the moderately priced (each mocktail is Rs 25-40) Blue Lagoon,Shirley Temple,Watermelon Spritzers and Mojitos and if you’re gutsy enough, ask for the Woo Woo mocktail,a combination of 10 exotic flavours topped up with soda.

Across the street from QD’s is a new shawarma joint,Dev’z. While they also serve North Indian,South Indian and Chinese cuisine, the outlet that opened on Monday evening is focusing on catching crowds with their shawarmas. We suggest you overlook the menu full of cheesy names (Magnetic Power of Paranthas,Spring Rolls ki Geometry) and just get the simple shawarma, very reasonably priced at Rs 20. To wash it down,go right from Dev’z to SP,the Shake Point. Ranju Aunty makes great shakes in seven flavours, including banana, mango, butterscotch and chocolate; the 300 ml shake is priced at Rs 30 and the 500 ml shake comes for Rs 50.

But if you’re looking for food and, more importantly,an ambience with a difference, may we suggest On the Go,a quaint sandwich-pasta place? Located opposite Hansraj College bus stand, the interiors are done up in soothing aquamarine and white tones and they serve grilled sandwiches, bruschettas and pasta. Renu Bhatia and her brother Sandeep Murada opened the hang-out spot in early April but it is only post July that business will take off. “We have Chinese and Punjabi dishes and pizzas. We wanted to provide students with different kinds of cuisine at affordable rates,” says Bhatia, who designed the space herself. Different and affordable it is. We recommend Bashed Up Potatoes, available in Italian,Barbecue and Chilly Lime styles at Rs 55,the Paneer Masala Scramble Sandwich at Rs 65,Auroville drinks from Pondicherry for the summer, like Ginger Nectar and Hibiscus at Rs 45 and end your meal with the in-house special,Cinammon Tortillas and Ice Cream, available at Rs 55. Bhatia has also planned other networking activities around the eatery, such as peer-to-peer networking, and hopes that the place will emerge as a student centre to exchange skills. “Food is just a bait for something bigger. Students are invited to come here with their ideas, post it on our softboards, network with each other and make things happen,” says Bhatia. And with food that melts in your mouth, yes they can.
