Fog chokes air, rail services on third day

Dense fog marred air travel for the third consecutive day at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday morning, leading to over 70 flights being either delayed or diverted.

Dense fog marred air travel for the third consecutive day at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Monday morning, leading to over 70 flights being either delayed or diverted.

Fog started to descend at the airport around 8 pm on Sunday night and gradually became dense, forcing airport authorities to implement low-visibility procedure (LVP).

Around 23 flights headed for the Capital had to be diverted to nearby airports due to the foggy conditions,an airport official said. The situation was, however, far better than Sunday, when 42 flights had to be diverted and the airport was completely shut down for two hours between 11 pm (Saturday) and 1 am.

Airport operations were affected for 14 hours from 8.36 pm on Sunday, after fog reduced the runway visibility range (RVR) to less than 50 metres, forcing airport authorities to implement LVP to ensure safe movement of aircraft after landing. Most of the flights were diverted between 12 am and 2.30 am on Monday when the RVR hovered between less than 50 metres to 75 metres. LVP was finally lifted around 10.36 am.

The situation was slightly better on Monday as air travellers were already aware of the chaos the day before. Several travellers, however, complained that despite checking with the airlines before leaving for the airport, they got know that their flight had been cancellled when they reached. “I knew that the fog might result in the flight being delayed or rescheduled,so I had called the airline beforehand. They told me it was on time, but upon reaching the airport I got to know that has been cancelled,” said Ashish Parekh,a passenger.

Twelve flights to Bangalore,Nagpur,Mumbai,Kolkata, and Jaipur could not take off from Delhi due to dense fog while 11 from these cities could not land in the Capital. Twenty-three flights were diverted to Bangalore,Lucknow,Japipur,Ahmedabad,Mumbai and other cities.
